We may be little, this glorious Island of Tasmania, but we have a big heart, the biggest heart in Australia it seems at the moment.
On Wednesday The Tasmanian House of Assembly became the first in Australia to formally support 'Same Sex Marriage'.
A motion calling on the federal government to amend the Australian 'Marriage Act' was passed with the support of government partners Labor and the Greens.
Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim said "It's time for the federal government to change our nations laws and to provide for marriage equality for all Australians, regardless of gender, regardless of sexuality,....The Tasmanian government has given thousands of same-sex couples around Australia - and their families and friends - hope that change is coming."
Two years ago my gay daughter Claire had to leave her country to marry her partner Lesley in Scotland. Like 'straight' people Claire and Lesley wanted their marriage legally recognised by the 'State'.
She desperately hopes that one day she can return to her home State Tasmania and marry Lesley and know that her marriage is legally recognised by the Australian government according the exact same rights as her other siblings.
As her mother I pray that day is not far away.
This post is dedicated to my daughters, Claire and Amy and my daughter-in-law Lesley.
