'Mad Men' and the return of the 'Waistline'
I must confess I'm a big fan of the television series 'Mad Men' and while I'm into confessions I have to admit that it's not the storyline, nor the womanising Don Draper that keeps me riveted to the screen but the shows 1960s sets and costumes that make me swoon!
The female characters Betty Draper and Joan Holloway have single handily turned the fashion industry on it's head. Fashion designers and the media have cottoned onto the fact that women love to dress up, they love to wear figure hugging feminine dresses...but here's the thing; we're sick of 'raunch cultures' influence on women's fashion (not to mention our kids, but more on that later).
In recent years the fashion industry has sold us a crock of 'sleaze'. The more is 'whore' look has dominated female fashion for far too long. There's a big difference between sleaze and sophisticated glamour.
But thanks to the 'Mad Men' phenomenen, the fashion industry has taken a 'U Turn' back to the glamour of the 50's and the 60's.
We’re talking corsets, kitten heels and cocktails. We’re talking 50’s full skirts, sweat heart necklines and cat’s eye sunglasses. Think curvaceous, sexy silhouettes where skirts hang lower than your backside. Think dresses with a bow to cinch in your waist so it looks like you have one. Think pretty floral prints. Think about celebrating being woman and not a 'whore'.
The definition of feminine dressing is not 'sleaze' please, it's a return to the 'waistline'!
