'The Help' - A Movie You Shouldn't Miss - don't pay attention to the critics!

Sometimes we pay way too much attention to 'Film Reviewers'.

We often place too much emphasis on the negative comments they make about certain films and place them in the 'I'll wait till it comes out on DVD basket'.

I almost did this with the film 'The Help' directed by Tate Taylor.

One 'highbrow' film critic here in Australia described this film as a 'schalmz-fest'.

A comment like that is enough to put anyone off.

On our last day in Sydney we had a couple of hours to kill before leaving for the airport so we decided to walk down to the George Street Cinema complex and take in a film.

My husband being the gentleman he is left the choice up to me and against my better judgement, or maybe the 'schalmz-fest' judgement, a little voice in my head said "choose The Help".

It's been a long time since I have been so positively affected by a film - and now I'm reading the book by Kathryn Stockett.

“The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed —even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times (The Help Official Movie Site).

In a time when quality 'intelligent' films are hard to come by, it was exhilarating and refreshing to see such a beautiful film with a big heart.

If this is 'schalmz' bring it on!
